El Esteco de Cafayate, in the heart of the Calchaquíes valleys, is an outstanding, up-dated winery that makes premium wines of great character. Its professional team transmits the philosophy of quality passed on to them for generations, combining it with an innovative spirit.
This winery was born towards the end of the XIX century when the first grapevines where planted in Cafayate. It was named after the legend of El Esteco, a wealthy city in northern Argentina destroyed by an earthquake. As the story goes, after various attempts to recover the city's treasures, the real riches were revealed in the magnificent vine-stocks, growing in a terroir privileged by an intense, dual climate.
The estate of El Esteco is located at 1,800 metres above sea level. It was one of the first to practise high- altitude viticulture and develop premium grape varieties in the valleys in northern Argentina.
The avant-garde spirit of this winery has always been outstanding: It was one of the first to obtain international prizes, develop organic vineyards and introduce enological tourism.
